We’ve been emptying septic tanks for over 35 years – providing services to homeowners and businesses across Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties.
Septic Tank Desludging
Septic tanks should be pumped out regularly to remove the solids (sludge) and floating scum that accumulate as sewage and wastewater pass through the tank.
Regular emptying and desludging will keep your septic tank in good working order and ensure it functions correctly, reducing the risk of blockages and overflow.
The frequency of desludging depends on the tank size and the number of people using the system but, as a rule of thumb, a septic tank with a capacity of 1000 gallons, serving an average size family, should be emptied every 12 months.
To keep your septic tank operating properly and reduce sludge accumulation it’s important to:
- Avoid putting oil, fats or excessive food waste down your drains.
- Use commercial cleaners and laundry detergent conservatively.
- Never put items such as wet wipes, disposable nappies, paper towels or cat litter in the system.
Signs that something may be wrong include slow drains or water backing up in sinks, basins and toilets and unpleasant odours. The land adjacent to your tank (the soakaway) may also show signs of becoming waterlogged or the lawn might appear unusually green.
